In a Beautiful Place Out In The Country

Some folks prefer the old Boards of Canada, some prefer the newer stuff; me, I'll always cherish their 2000 EP, Boards of Canada – In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country, a flawless little four-song record whose eponymous track makes it absolutely outstanding.

The thumping beat, mutated organ-like ambience, the barely intelligible vocoded vocals, all the signature elements that define Boards of Canada permeate this track; to me, this is their difinitive track. In 2000, since people were starved for a new album, this track got a lot of airplay on the local (and likely national) college radio airwaves, and it was on constant rotation in my car's CD changer for a very long time.

And so I associate this track with driving, with summer, with the blistering heat outside and the air-conditioned bubble of my car. Everytime I listen to it, I think of the sunkissed beauty of the city of Miami that you see from the protective bubble of your motor vehicle while driving around, and how different it becomes once you put the gear into park, tun the car off, and walk out into the city.
