Apple-Nintendo Merger or Mac Gaming Platform?

The Apple-Nintendo rumor appears to be out there again, after news that Apple may be working on a gaming division. Sure, the new DS Lite has that iPod look and feel, and sure, Nintendo and Apple combat that “third player” position in their respective markets by offering more desirable gadgets than the competition. But, that’s where the similarities end.

According to this blog post at c|net, people just don’t see this happening mainly because both companies have had such an independent culture for so long, that you could say neither company is merger material.

If anything, I think Apple might have decided to embrace gaming and wants to make the Mac a viable gaming platform. Perhaps they will include a marketing push in the same manner that Microsoft is pushing Vista as a gaming platform. Perhaps they will build a good in-house gaming team and woo more game developers to release Mac games. After all, Bungie, developer of Microsoft’s cash-cow Halo franchise, was working on Mac games long ago.

Furthermore, gaming is, after all, a big business, and if Apple can get gamers behind their Macs in the way that graphic artists were, it would mean a huge new source of revenue for Apple. And if Nintendo is secretly in talks with Apple, say, to lease out it’s Virtual Console to Apple, it could mean an answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Live Anywhere.

So, I definitely don’t see a merger here, but I’m not ruling out the possibility that Nintendo and Apple are talking behind closed doors. And if they are, it could mean exciting news for gamers on all platforms.
