Home Project: Shelf as Workstation

It’s Labor Day weekend, and that means it’s time for some house work. This weekend, I focused on my quasi home office room. I got wood flooring and paint, which I’ll use later. For today, I upgraded my workspace.

Here’s what it looked like before

I got this desk probably a decade ago and used it for writing/drawing in addition to computer work. Now that I’ve got my own home and considerably more desk space elsewhere, I don’t need all this desk real estate anymore. So, I set out to build a shelf after seeing such a set-up on Apartment Therapy.

Naturally, I set out for IKEA when I decided to build a desk/shelf hybrid. And naturally, it didn’t cost me much. I got the shelf, brackets, slide-out keyboard tray, and a cable organizer, and got to work.

Some drums helped hold it up while I installed it in the wall. Very helpful drums, they are! The coolest part of this shelf stems from a problem I had: I didn’t realize until after I’d purchased all the materials and unpacked them that the slide-out keyboard tray was much too deep for the shelf.

I fixed that problem like so: I drilled holes into the wall so that the slide-out keyboard tray slides into the wall.

What it looks like now….

I haven’t hooked up the computer and routed everything neatly through the cable organizer just yet, but it’s looking good already. The massively increased space from using this little shelf as a workstation allows me to pull my keyboard in closer, and much more room for my drums, making it this much easier to turn my workstation into a quasi recording studio.

Blip: Yellow Rain

I was just driving home this evening and rain and sunset mixed together to make everything cool and yellowish. I’d already taken more than enough photos at times like these, so I thought I’d do something a little different. Music is: Lamb – “Five”.

I shot a few bits of video during the drive from one friend’s home in Coral Gables to another friend’s home in South Miami. Here’s what came of it. Music: “Neuflex” by Two Lone Swordsmen.

Blip: In Sync

While driving home one night, I encountered a lot of road construction, and noticed that the various flashing lights were vaguely in sync with the beat of the music. Music: “Beat Connection” by LCD Soundsystem.

New Vimeo Channel: Blips

I’m limited in my video capabilities by the fact that I don’t have an actual video camera, so I have to rely on the video function on my still camera. So, I started shooting some short clips of scenery and adding clips of music and ended up with “blips”.

After creating a few of them, I looked around to see if the Vimeo or Flickr communities had already started doing the same thing, but found nothing, so I created a new channel devoted to sub-30 second music/video “blips”.

The Who?

Did you know that all three CSI shows use music from The Who as their theme songs? A friend of mine recently alerted me to this obvious little bit of information. I listened to each theme song in my head for a moment, and realized it was indeed true.

Apparently, somebody involved in the production of the CSI franchise has a soft spot for The Who. Perhaps Jerry Bruckheimer is a big fan? I did a quick search on the connection between CSI And The Who, and apparently I’m not the only one (obviously) who’s noticed this. I even came across an old article sneering at the team behind the CSI franchise for apparently making CSI: Miami a carbon copy of the original, right down to using a track from The Who for a theme song.

I should also inform you that I can’t stop singing “who are you, who, who, who who” in my head, though I think “Baba O’Reilly’ is the best song of the trio. Thanks Mr. Bruckheimer and company, for getting these three songs stuck in my head, I think.
